Christopher Johnson was born in 1961 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and is the son of a farmer. He studied for both his BA and MA in Fine Art at Rhodes University, South Africa during the mid 1980's, his master’s thesis being on the work of Zimbabwean artist Robert Paul. He resided in South Africa from 1981 where he used to push his paints, brushes and materials around in a pram!

He travels extensively to paint, particularly in Africa, France and Italy and spent a long period painting in Venice in the early 1990s.  He has lived in England for some years now and is based in Gloucestershire where he paints full time in a loosely figurative style.

The fact that Johnson usually paints on site means that his work has an immediacy and freshness. However, he does from time to time revisit pieces and some are developed over long periods. His paintings are usually underpainted tempera, followed by layers of thickly laden oils, but he also paints with acrylic, watercolour, gouache and ink.  His subjects are landscapes and figures.

Christopher Johnson has exhibited widely in Britain and South Africa and his work is represented in a number of collections including the Bank of England, De Beers and IBM.

He is a good friend and I believe he has a great future ahead of him as avery dedicated artist.
