Donald McIntyre was born in Leeds, however he spent the most memorable years of his childhood living close to the inspiring coastline of Western Scotland. Whilst living here he befriended local artist James Wright R.S.W., under whose tutelage he developed a palette firmly rooted in the tradition of the Scottish colourist.
In early adulthood McIntyre qualified as a dentist, working in the British Army and then in the school service until the age of forty. He was then inspired by the Howard Roberts gallery in Cardiff and he took to the crucial decision to devote himself entirely to painting.
For the past 45 years McIntyre has lived in North Wales and is a retired member of The Royal Cambrian Academy. He was also formally a member of The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, The Royal Society of Marine Artists, and The Pastel Society.
“That’s what I really like about the coast; I find something in the landscape – light or something that makes me want to paint. I am drawn to it because it is timeless. I think it’s because I lived on the coast as a boy. I just love it.”
Recent years have seen wide recognition and reproduction of his work in books and magazines and he is now one of the widest collected artists working in Wales.
He continues to paint in vibrant colour, managing to capture the light and life of his subject matter with masterly small yet broad brushstrokes.
He has held many successful solo exhibitions across the country and his work is held in public and private collections worldwide.
