1902-1998
Harry Hambling was the father of artist Maggi Hambling, he was born in 1902 at a farm in Snape. After School he began work in Barclays Bank and in the 1920’s settled in Hadleigh.
Hambling had dabbled in amateur acting but it wasn't until the age of 65 that he began to paint after his daughter gave him a painting set for a retirement gift.
Although untaught, it was at once apparent that he had a strong personal vision: his life long intimacy with East Anglia inspiring paintings of delight, innocence and intensity.
He held four highly successful one man shows in Hadleigh in 1977, 1981, 1991, 1993 and at the Minories in Colchester in 1988. Hambling died peacefully in Suffolk aged 96.
